Cuddles
After several weeks of cold weather my chickens and other poultry seem to be handling it way better than the beginning of the cold… List of things I have noticed
Ducks 🦆 are not as affected by the cold as I thought they would be… before the snow these Ducks was still swimming in their creek holes and having the time of their life even after temperatures dropped more they still love their water (which is warm water so could be why)
Guinea fowls 🐤 Forrest and Jenny are a hit or miss of liking it and not the seem to come out sometimes from the coop but spend more time inside the coop which is def not their usual compared to warmer temperatures
Turkeys 🦃 Bonnie and Clyde are not as bothered their feet still look good bc I keep checking to make sure no one has frost bite or anything alarming or unusual… I have noticed they do roost more and aren’t as crazy but that could be bc of not getting to run around the yard too and being in the run full time for the last 3 weeks
Chickens 🐓 are doing great even though I can tell the small chickens (bantams) are more fluffed out and staying inside the coop than the run more the have had nothing alarming but I can’t say that for my bigger chickens and roosters I have noticed little black specks on their combs not all of them and mainly the roosters after researching about what it is I found out it’s actually like frostbite 🥶 and it is suggested in some colder climate areas before the cold hits to put a comb balm on them to prevent this from happening (I didn’t know that was even a thing until now in my area due to we normally have warmer winters than we have this year) but this just happened in the last week but it’s not severe and should affect them later but I will be keeping an eye on it to ensure it gets better… When reading of this I’m glad I read further into it because it did say DO NOT APPLY WHEN COLD WEATHER IS ALREADY ARRIVED bc it will actually make it worse but I’m glad I know this for the future to prevent this!!!
After caring for them differently for this cold snowy winter with the changing of the food adding a light for more daylight hours and also giving them extra treats and more frequent water changes instead of once a day to twice sometimes 3 my egg production went from 0 to 10+ a day within 2 weeks HAPPY CHICKENS HAPPY LIFE 🐓🐔🛖☀️
